Based in New York City, Meipiao (MP) is a non-profit foundation that inspires and facilitates the professional development of Chinese Americans by sharing the narratives of individuals who are leaders in art, business, design, sports, and entrepreneurship. We believe the stories we tell will help nurture young Chinese Americans to pursue creative careers that align with their personal passions; thereby developing a vibrant group of leaders who will contribute to the growth of their respective industries. Meipiao’s unified mission is to create these unique opportunities by inspiring, educating, and facilitating.
’m not a Feminist, nor a patriarchy supporter. I support the life choices that people make according to their own values, as long as they can be responsible. I want to talk more specifically about female entrepreneurship. Woman, compared to man, sustain more burden from family, especially when constrained by the traditional social value that woman must go through marriage and have children. All these separate woman’s attention from business. So, if a woman wants to start her business, she needs to prepare for these burdens and evaluate the risks. For example, based on the current age, she needs to consider if she can pull through a 3-5 years project, and, during this 3-5 years period, if she can focus on her business or would suffer too much from the family and marriage burden. She needs to figure these all out and then decide if she wants a start-up.
I was cheered up by some good ideas when I was still in school, and then I started my business. Start-up is highly rational; even if you have passion for it, it can’t be romantic. All the business has to create some value, but platform business doesn’t always create value at the beginning, because it needs a highly rigid market demand. So, for girls who want a start-up, you need to figure out if you want to be the CEO. The job for CEO is super stressful, but if you want to be a partner, and be in charge of only the market and other communication-related cases that are more suitable for a girl, your job would be less tiring. If you want to be the CEO, you need to have a long-term strategic view, which means you need to think of the step after the next—the things that nobody thinks of, and you need to constantly think about your business and the future of the field. Usually, female is not used to think from a grand angle, or to say male tends to think more of the big picture. So, everybody needs to think before the start-up, of the specific part will you be. That is super important. click
